Abstract

The relevance, potential and effectiveness of implementing a non-destructive method for determining the mechanical properties of iron-carbon alloy castings in foundry production are demonstrated, based on the results of monitoring the chemical composition of the melt directly during the smelting process in induction furnaces. The dependencies of the strength, hardness, etc., of grey cast iron on the content of carbon, silicon and phosphorus in its composition, as reported in the technical literature, are analysed. It is shown that, as generalised indicators of the chemical composition of grey cast iron when solving the «chemical composition–properties» problem typical of foundry production, it is recommended to use the values of the carbon equivalent (SECV), the degree of eutecticity (SEVT), and the carbon-to-silicon ratio (C/Si). A positive aspect of efforts to address the «chemical composition–properties» problem in cast iron is the attempt to account, in the formulas developed for this purpose, for the influence of casting thickness on mechanical properties. A probabilistic approach using the Monte Carlo method is proposed to solve the «chemical composition–mechanical properties» problem for grey cast iron in both its direct and inverse forms. Examples are given of solving the «chemical composition–properties» problem using the probabilistic approach and a database of mechanical properties and chemical element content in grey cast iron with flake graphite in accordance with DSTU 8833:2019. Calculation formulas developed to solve this problem are proposed. The results of their numerical solution are presented.
